Nutella OR Hazelnut spread

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

Homemade Nutella OR Hazelnut spread

Believe me it is so easy to make your chocolate hazelnut spread at home!

All you need is 5 ingredients and a blender or food processor.

I roasted the hazelnuts in the air fryer.

Origins of Nutella

It’s believed that Nutella was invented in the 1920s by an Italian pastry chef named Pietro Ferrero. He thought of the idea when seeing factory workers going to work with tomato and cheese sandwiches.

He knew a sweet, chocolatey hazelnut spread would be an inexpensive, and popular.

The spread was originally called “Superscheme” but was changed to “Nutella” in the 1960s. Soon after that, it became wildly popular in Italy and later, throughout the world!

It’s also delicious, vegan, gluten-free, and ridiculously close to the real thing. Win-win!

It all starts with the hazelnuts, roasted to warm up the natural oils and loosen the skins. Then blend!

See the texture/color difference below. Either way, still delicious!

is high in calories, sugar and fat, all of which could cause health problems over time if consumed in high amounts

What do you eat Nutella with?

I love to eat with a spoon, but you can between two slices of bread, spread onto a crusty baguette, in a crepe, in a crostata, in brioche/cornetto/croissant, in a donut or on top of gelato.

Can Nutella freeze?

While it's highly unlikely the hazelnut spread will last in any home long enough to require freezing.

Who are still curious whether or not you can freeze Nutella. The answer is yes, you can freeze Nutella.

Blender Model: Vitamixvitamix.com

Ingredients:

1 cup Hazelnuts

4 Tbsp Powder Sugar

1 Tbsp Coco Powder

5 oz Dark Chocolate

2 Tbsp + 2Tsp Coconut oil

Instructions:

Air fryer Recipe:

Preheat the air fryer at 325F for a couple of minutes. Roast 1 cup of hazelnuts for 10 minutes.

Oven Recipe:

Preheat the oven to 375 F or air fryer at 325 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat. Place hazelnuts on the sheet. Roast for 12 to 15 minutes in the oven.

Remove from the oven or air fryer and transfer onto a clean kitchen towel. Gently rub the nuts with the towel until the skin comes off. Place nuts in to Vitamix and process until finely ground. Scrape the sides of the food processor bowl as needed. Process nuts until they start to liquefy and release oil. It can take about 3 minutes. Stop the food processor as needed to scrape the sides of the bowl. Add melted coconut oil and blend it for a minute. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and dark chocolate and process until it all comes together. You may need to add more oil if the mixture clumps up. Scrape the spread into a clean jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. If using coconut oil, you may need to let the spread sit on the counter to soften before using.
